I wanted to muse on the topic of social media today, with thoughts on whether it is good or evil. I must admit back in the day, I had a My Space account when those first started and I loved it. I personally dreaded switching over to the sad, boring blue pages of the dinky college start up “Facebook” when it first went public; but it clearly had more shareholder backing, so it was only a matter of time before it took over the social media world.
I think as a general rule, most people wake up and look immediately at social media on their phones before anything else, which is so sad! I see couples out to dinner together on dates scrolling, not talking, and I think “that is the saddest thing I have ever seen.” Families celebrating holidays or vacations by having their noses in a phone watching TikTok videos or looking at a friend’s Insta page, which is all wrong!
I used to think that social media was a great way to connect with people that you have not seen in awhile; like classmates or family not living nearby. Now I kind of wish that I did not have to see half of the “obligatory people” that I must curtsy follow. Sometimes it is all just a little too much to take in on a regular viewing basis. Too many opinions, too much gloat, and way too much of “I am better than you are pictures“; because that is the entire point of social media.
Even worse is watching those photos actually being captured; which is one of my secret pleasures. See I am a people watcher, as in I enjoy watching people out in public; usually behaving badly, which happens all the time. Honestly it is better than any reality television. You should try it, just go to a public area, grab a drink and find a seat; observe the people around you in their natural habitat. As they pose for selfies, photograph food, make new purchases, pose in front of other people’s cars as if they are their own to make themselves richer. As you observe you learn a lot about the human race in general, and it is all very comical.
Then there is the oversharing on social media which is a bit over the top. I mean I know when friends get a divorce, get pregnant, trying to get pregnant or could be after a wild night. If they are sick, might be sick or letting everyone they could be sick. If they had a bowel movement for the day, bought a house or burned their toast this morning. I mean I am all for sharing news, but sometimes less is more people; your turd in the toilet or cockroach on the counter is really not mine or anyone’s business. Then you wonder why people judge you? Well I have a clue for you!
Besides all the oversharing that is happening on social media these days, another problem seems to be the misinformation. There is a lot of really bad information coming from very unreliable sources. Just because your friend or family posted it, you want to automatically believe it. No one ever thinks to fact check or review the sources of the original links, so now this information which may or may not be based in truth, is worse than any phishing email because we are lazy.
So what do you think, social media good or evil? How many kids have eaten Tide Pods, cooked NyQuil chicken or jumped off milk crates thanks to TikTok videos? I mean it is one way to thin the heard; if you simply can not watch those videos and realize those are all horrible ideas and not to do them. It is clearly like the show Jackass on steroids. However, it is not stopping the youth of today from giving it a go, since they are clearly unstoppable with their “label free” thinking; which might just fall back on how these snowflakes were raised. You see this is exactly why we need labels, like: “Don’t Eat the Tides Pods DUMB ASS!” Although, secondary musing- “maybe there is wisdom in this train of thought and we did let go of all labels; including these warning label which seem pretty obvious and thin the heard of dumb asses even more.”
So I guess I am still on the fence about social media, while there are parts of it I do like; I feel like all good things get crapped on by the parts of the human race that evolution left behind. These people are still picking there noses and eating it while fling poo like monkey’s; hell even the monkey’s in the zoo act better than some the humans I have seen on social media these days.
So for now I will just stick to saucy memes and gifs for my own social media posts, if I post at all. I feel like they are fun like daily zany comic strip, and remind me of The Far Side bits if you remember those, which were always very representative of my life. I guess as long as I stay away from the politics and religion I should be okay, right?
